The items in this series comprise records from 1905-1948 of the work of the Augustana Synod Mission (ASM) in China. They represent work conducted in the China mission field by the China Mission Society, its successor the China Mission Board, and its successor, the Board of Foreign Missions (BFM) of the Augustana Synod. The records include handwritten and typewritten correspondence, reports, publications, articles, and pamphlets. Of particular interest is the correspondence. In addition to correspondence pertaining to updates regarding work in the China mission field, there is a significant amount of correspondence written from 1947-1948 between missionaries in the field and the president of the ASM and the officers of the BFM regarding the tenuous political situation in China and the welfare of Augustana missionaries, who were having to flee their stations. Authors of the correspondence include Ethel M. Akins, the Rev. John L. Benson, the Rev. Nels Benson, the Rev. August W. Edwins, the Rev. Anders Hansen, the Rev. John W. Lindbeck, the Rev. Donald E. Nelson, Sr. Ingeborg Nystul, Dr. Lillian A. Olson, the Rev. Victor E. Swenson, the Rev. Roy F. Thelander, and the Rev. David W. Vikner. The folder titled, "Dr Peter Hsi," pertains to a matter regarding Dr. Peter Hsi, a graduate of the ASM seminary at Shenkow, China, and teacher at the Chungking Biblical Seminary. Architectural drawings were placed in an oversized folder located in the mapcase area.
